You have to tell php to *not* use the self-contained mysql library it
ships with.  I forget the exact flag to tell it to use the
pre-installed one.  Then it works fine.  Why they felt it necessary to
make the default to use the self-contained library when an existing
one is found, I don't know.  Seems silly to me.  (Kind of like your
email's Message-ID using an internal IP address -- not very unique!)
