Well, after many tries and much pulling of hair, it still doens't quite
work.  Essentially, if I compile using the '--with-debug' flag, it it
works just fine.  If I use the '--without-debug flag', it does not work
(with the same errors as above).  The build envrionment is the same for
each build with that single exception.  Finally, I did edit the
readline/Makefile to use '-O2' instead of '-O6' as per the documentation.

So I have two questions:
  1.  What can I do to help someone track this down and fix it?  ;)
  2.  How much of preformance hit will I get using the debug version?
