MySQL does not support page locks. The advantage of lock tables is that MySQL
will not
try to obtain a write lock for the tables it is updating for each update query,
as
it would already have the needed locks. The only difference between doing it
with lock tables and without is that the tables will remain locked in between
updates ( even if
you do not do an explicit lock tables, the tables still must be locked for each
write operation). This should not be a big deal if you are not doing anything
time-cosuming in between your updates. Another very important advantage is that
the key buffer will not be getting flushed on each update, but this can be
accomplished with delayed_key_write option in the latest version of MySQL (
3.23.8).
