Have you found the explanation of the DATE_FORMAT in section 7.3.11 of
the MySQL manual ("Date and time functions") unclear?  Can you offer
some suggestions for how it might be improved to make it easier to use?  
(I'm assuming you're really interested in the format of the date as it
is viewed, not the internal representation of the values when they are
stored in the database, as there is no good reason for altering the
latter, and plenty of incentive to store them as they are.)
