Well oracle is nasty. Sybase is better. First you would never
"download" it...
put the cd in and go. And then oracle uses up almost a GB of disk space
- and
it completely plugs up your whole machine with useless utilities etc...
I think
i recall 180MB of documentation which sounds impossible but they managed
it.
Sybase seems clean this way. But regardless as to whether oracle and
sybase are good,
the deal here is that loading the commercial packages no problem => I
have NEVER seen any questions on that subject on the Sybase List
server. Once it is loaded,
setting the beast up so you can use it takes like a day (initializing
disk devices,
adding logins etc) and requires some training/skill. I like sybase much
better
than oracle. With both oracle and sybase you can easily misconfigure
your system through sheer ignorance so that there are real problems down
the road.
MySQL seems easier to set up than either oracle or sybase - much
easier to make a working database - although perhaps the security scheme
of
sybase seems a bit cleaner.

The problem with mysql is that the download page is confusing. This is a
simple problem to solve. View the number of mail messages on this very
subject.
PEOPLE ARE COMPLAINING THAT THEY CANT FIND/GET THE SOFTWARE - NOT THAT
THEY DONT KNOW
WHAT TO DO WITH IT ONCE THEY HAVE IT INSTALLED. And in the week i have
been
on this list there have been quite a few notes on this subject.

The problem seems easy to fix - and there is no reason for it to exist
in the first
place. So far im pleased with mysql (although the lack of stored
procedures is
a pain - and i seem to be able to get the thing to lock up from my
perl/dbi scripts).
