Re: version 4.0.20a-debug, running on XP

My computer got flaky and I had to snuff and reinstall all software. So
I re-installed XP and a mountain of other programs including MySQL. I
also took my pre-existing databases and put them in c:\mysql\data like
they were before.

If I shell to DOS and type "mysqld" the server seems to start. If I type
"mysqladmin -u root shutdown" in another DOS window, it seems to stop.

If (while running) I type "mysqlc" in another DOS window, I get the
mysql cursor. If I type "show databases", it only shows test. However
out on the DOS shell, if I type "mysqlshow -u root" it shows me all of
them. And while in mysql, I can create a database and table.

And my perl programs no longer work. The DBI connection doesn't carry
the day.

I recollect that I could control all with mysqladmin once upon a time.
Running that from windows gives me the message that libmysql.dll wasn't
found. (It's in debug and opt.) Running mysqladmin from DOS just gives
me a help screen.

I have the feeling that the MySQL installation requires something of me
that it didn't use to. I've looked and looked but just don't see it.

Any help is very much appreciated.
