No replies to this, but I've now gone through verison 5.0.26 and 5.0.27
and still the problem is there.
I notice there's now a bug report (bug #21781) with similar reports.
Indeed, in my case I'm using SSL and once that's disabled for the slave
user, the slave server can shut down properly.
So the problem appears to be with MySQL's SSL handling, at least as far as
replication is concerned.
