FWIW, I use xtrabackup for building slaves, never had a problem with it, other than that
the latest 1.3 build doesn't work on Ubuntu Lucid, but the 1.2 binaries are fine. I wrote

The backups take a long time, but restores are really quick, and it's more reliable than
mysqldump. Because it back up the whole server, not just one DB, I've never had any
trouble with users.
