FWIW, I use xtrabackup for building slaves, never had a problem with it, other than that the latest 1.3 build doesn't work on Ubuntu Lucid, but the 1.2 binaries are fine. I wrote a blog on it a while ago: http://marcus.bointon.com/archives/87-MySQL-backups-with-Perconas-XtraBackup.html The backups take a long time, but restores are really quick, and it's more reliable than mysqldump.
