Subject:duplicate binlog-do-db value problem on master?

On my master, If I have no binlog-do-db value specified in the my.cnf 
file SHOW MASTER STATUS reports no value for bin-log-do-db.

But, if I then add this line to my.cnf:

binlog-do-db=canonizer

then restart mysqld.

Then when I do SHOW MASTER STATUS\G I get:

Binlog_Do_DB: canonizer,canonizer


Why is the canonizer database value duplicated?
