CXX := g++
CPPFLAGS := -I/usr/include/mysql -I/usr/include/mysql++
LDLIBS := -lmysqlpp -lmysqlclient_r


That should be enough for "make hello" to do the right thing.

You don't need the -L/usr/lib option because the linker always looks
in /usr/lib anyway
