As to why we want a program that will compile, it's because a) your code won't, outside the larger program from which it was extracted; and b) while it looks well-formed, the fact that we cannot compile it, execute it and see the problem ourselves means what you've posted isn't actually a complete problem report. That is to say, your problem probably lies outside of what you posted. Reassure yourself of this by running the examples.
