The proper fix is probably to add an autoconf test to see if -lz is 
needed to link against -lmysqlclient or not.  This doesn't help the 
Windows users, but maybe this problem doesn't occur on Windows?

In the meantime, you can just remove all the "-lz" instances from 
Makefile.in, re-run configure, and it should then build.  Let us know 
either way.
