Well, if wxUSE_UNICODE is also defined then wxString is a typedef for
std::wstring.  Depending on your platform etc that might be unicode -
you'll have to test it.

I don't know where the bug is.  My money is on wxString being the cause
(because it goes to std::cerr correctly) which is why I'm suggesting
eliminate that first.
