I don't expect it to always be thread-safe under MinGW, because it can depend on a library that doesn't allow for the option of thread safety in this instance. If one wants thread safety under MinGW, they must either take the extra steps to make it happen, or use a different compiler that does provide the necessary facilities. By this point, I'm happy when I can see the thing *build* under MinGW.
