One other comment: another option is to use the do_nothing manipulator by default, but make it an option to build the library so that it always quotes field names. It might even be possible to make this a #define, so that different programs built on a single system could have it either way. That would work if all of the manipulator uses are in templates defined in header files. Bottom line, I think auto-quoting field names is a bad idea as a general policy.
