Note that placeholders are specific to the Perl driver: They are
not supported by the engine, at least not now. So we´re in a
special case situation anyways.

So I cannot follow the argument of "existing code" (at least not
MySQL specific code) and I see no 

If finally double quotes *are* supported by the engine (Monty is currently
considering that), then he will probably support double quotes too, but
this is fine for me, as we´re no longer a special case.
