connection error (111)

    Good day,
    I'm pretty much aware of the fact this error is something most of use
have received at least once to this day (I got it twice :D), but I got
really stuck while trying to solve it.
    So, first of all:
    - running RedHat Linux 7.0, kernel 2.2.16-22
    - perl version 5.6.0-9
    - mysql 3.23.22-6 (beta) - server & devel
    - php, mod_php and php-mysql 4.0.1p2-9
    - perl-mysql interface (DBI 1.14, Data-Dumper and
Msql-Mysql-modules.1-15)

    Symptoms:
    - when I try to connect to mysql using perl or php, I get an error
(errno 111), saying:

Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (111)

  - the file (socket) exists, it is owned by the mysql user and has full acces mask (777)

    I'd really appreciate any form of help :)
