You can't login as plain old nobody.
The default mysql user is your unix user, so if you are
logged into unix as root , and entered "mysql" you were logged into 
mysql as root.
You appear to have been logged in as "mysql".
If the user "mysql" has full privileges, then there was nothing to 
prevent the deletion.
