Starting MySQL?

I believe I have installed MySQL correctly with the rpm command. 
However, when I try to start MySQL by typing safe_mysqld &, I get:

Starting MySQL daemon with databases from /var/lib/mysql
MySQL daemon ended 

then I type:

mysqldadmin version

I get: command not found

any help would be sincerely appreciated
