Don't know if this is your problem, but MM.MySQL only understands
'&' as the parameter separator, not ';', so you might try this
instead:

String connectionURL 
="jdbc:mysql://sunblade11:3306/Messages?user=root&password=";


If you're using Tomcat, note that there's an example jdbc:mysql string
in conf/server.xml that uses the ';' character, which is incorrect.  The
example looks like this:

       <Realm  className="org.apache.catalina.realm.JDBCRealm" debug="99"
              driverName="org.gjt.mm.mysql.Driver"
 
connectionURL="jdbc:mysql://localhost/authority?user=test;password=test"
               userTable="users" userNameCol="user_name" userCredCol="user_pass"
           userRoleTable="user_roles" roleNameCol="role_name" />
