i definitely have plenty of disk and swap so that is not the problem.  i
checked the libgcc.a and nothing in that dir has changed since i built
it.

your version of egcs is more recent than mine. 

gcc -v

/usr/local/lib/gcc-lib/sparc-sun-solaris2.7/egcs-2.91.60/specs gcc
version egcs-2.91.60 19981201 (egcs-1.1.1 release)

i will build the newer egcs and maybe the problem will go away.

i downloaded it and will try it out. i just like to have fresh build
rather than binaries.

i also have to do a lot of reading of the man pages to get it up.
