mysql_install_db problems

I'm trying to install the latest mysql on Solaris.  I've unpacked
everything successfully, but when I run the install script is get

Creating db table
Creating host table
Creating user table
Creating func table
Creating tables_priv table
Creating columns_priv table

and then it just hangs.  I've left it running for up to six hours and
nothing happens,  Help!
