Subject:DBI Instalation question?

I am trying to install DBI.  When I follow these instructions :

3.Build the distribution and compile everything:

     shell> perl Makefile.PL
     shell> make
     shell> make test
     shell> make install

at step 2: make  I get the following

[root@dyn1-tnt1-6 DBI-1.08]# make
bash: make: command not found


Any help would be greatly appreciated.
