It should be compiled with native BSDI 3.1 threads.  All
self-contained, with no references to any libraries on your system.

No, since it doesn't care what libraries are on your system.  All
necessary code is built into the binary distribution.

If you're using the binary distribution, why are you trying to follow
the compiling instructions to build it?
