Mixing protocols doesn't really work for anybody. well, you can use the telnet client to speak to any service, as long as you are capable of typing the poper protocol characters. Telnet clients are handy for debugging SMTP servers, for example. But in general, you want to use the mysql command line client to speak to mysql. That is, unless you're debugging the mysql protocol ;-)
