problem with 'mysql -h remote.host.com'

just a clarification of my own posting, sorry:

| mysqld is running on that machine, and using mysql I can
| talk to that mysqld and look at tables etc.

if it wasn't clear, i meant "using mysql (on hci) I can talk to that
mysqld (on hci)".

i.e., mysql from cliffs fails, but from hci (where mysqld is running)
it works.
