Subject:how to change character set

Hello,
I have MySQL 3.22.27 installed from binary distribution under Linux. I
need to change the character set to win1251. Is there any easy way to
accomplish this other than getting a source distribution , ./configure
--with-charset=win1251 , and compiling ? In any case, how will existing
data in tables be affected ?
