Looks like "dick" has misinstalled the library. It should be
world-readable. He should chmod 644 it.

That should work then, if you specify -L/u/april/mysql -lmysqlclient
on your command. But you tried that and it still gives you a
symbol-not-found error for mysql_real_connect(), right?
