I recently benchmarked (via mysql-super-smack) a new machine I setup
with MySQL. It's a 2 CPU Pentium III 850 with 1GB of memory. With a
key cache of 384MB and other generous caches, I was able to sustain
just under 7,000 queries per second using test queries that always hit
keys.

When I added occasional updates to the list of queries it dropped to
about 2,500 queries per second.

So those are some ball-park figures.
