You might check the INSTALL.REDHAT  that is with the PHP install directory.
I had the same problem with libraries having to be linked and in the
instructions it has two examples of errors that could occure and it offers
the solutions.

You might need to create a symbolic link to your libraries if you get the
libphp3.so could not be found when starting up the Apache server.

This would be  (ln -s /usr/lib /etc/httpd) But check the INSTALL.REDHAT  to
make sure.

After I typed this at the command prompt everything worked fine.  I still
can't get PHP4 to work right.?
