Bob, sorry I just read your original post again more closely.
It's not a MySQL password problem, or else you would be getting
a different error ('User ... not allowed USING PASSWORD? YES').

Where is your mysql.sock located?  Make sure that Unix user
'norman' has read/write permission on it.

Perhaps posting with the 'mysqlbug' script would be helpful to
us.
