As Ed Carp said, albeit somewhat reworded; you need to compile PHP3 with
MySQL support as it isn't included by default.

Subject: mysql_connect()
I have installed MySQL on our web server and I am now trying to connect to
the MySQL server through PHP3 using the mysql_connect() command but I get a
Fatal error: Call to unsupported or undefined function mysql_connect()
message.
Have I installed (or not installed) part of MySQL wrong?
Please help, this is an emergency.
Dave.
