I should have written this in the first place: :)
I'm using BSDI, 
vi works from the shell and so does pico, but NOT form inside 
mySQL.
I've tried so far to write the full path to the variable, but mySQL 
keeps complaining

I really do appreciate any ideas to get this thing going. So I thougth 
you deserve to be better informed.
