non auto-increment unique id generation

I want to generate my own Unique ids for MySQL. In Windows I normally use a
GUID either coverting it to a string or using the raw value. Is there a
Unix routine accessible from PHP I can use for this purpose?

There must be some routine around capable of doing this.
