I had the same problem recently restart the server so it can create your socket again and
it should be all right.

Hey Peter,
2 options;
Check the socket key-value in the my.cnf file under the client section.
Explicitly tell mysqladmin what one to use with the relevant cmd line
option. See the documentation for syntax.
