Getting DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS in MySQL

I want to get some basic frequencies and descriptive statistics on a single
table, for example:

What are the frequencies of all the different values in each column? How
many times do each appear, that sort of thing. And it would be really nice
to be able to get some CROSSTABS as well.
