  I have a similar setup, linux 2.2.3, glibc 2.1 and egcs 1.1.1 and it
compiled fine for me here. I used the following options:

CC=gcc CXX=gcc \
./configure --prefix=/usr/local/mysql \
            --with-gnu-ld \
	    --with-unix-socket-path=/var/mysql/mysql.sock \
	    --with-mysqld-user=mysql \
	    --enable-thread-safe-client \
	    --without-readline \
	    --without-debug \
	    --without-bench
