Also note that mysql doesn't need a my.cnf file and will happily run with default values.
It's possible that there is none and you'll have to create it.
To see where your mysqld is configured to check for the config file do:
mysql --verbose --help | grep -C3 my.cnf
This will give you a list of paths it checks in order.
