RE: Migration of mysql 3.23.32 from Tru64 to RHEL 5.1

Hi Joerg et al,

It's perhaps a tribute to the mysql team that I have actually managed
to build 3.23.32 and link php3 and php4 to it on RH EL 5.1 66 bit. The
server starts, we can access some legacy databases using the mysql
client and a couple of web sites seem to work connecting as well. Much
work still to be done. Congrats to the Open Source Community for
producing such portable software.

IMO, the main problem is that these sources are very old and were not 
written (or checked) to work with current compilers.

I have absolutely no experience with PHP, but I still think it might
be 
easier to use current software versions and get rid of those old ones.

I know that migrating to MySQL 5 and PHP 5 would need quite some 
resources, but I also think that adapting those old sources for
current 
compilers might need a similar amount of resources.

I do not think your current approach will take less effort than the 
migration to current versions.
Consider that the information about your old versions is phasing out 
too, so staying with these versions would lead into a dead row.
