speical characters in text column

hi friends,

i searched on google but not file a solution.

is there a way that i can store special characters (return, new line, tab, 
etc) into mysql (ver. 4.1.12) table with text type?

i use textarea tag for user to enter the text.

my goal is to store/display EXACTLY what user entered in the textarea tag.
