setup on windows xp

I have just installed win xp on a new hard drive.  I also have win 2k
installed on this machine with mysql 5 installed.  What is the easiest
way get the server running on xp with all the settings and old data
intact?  When I start it up with mysqld --console I get a lot of errors.
  Also the mysql gui admin tool says the server isn't running but I can
connect to it with the query browser and execute queries
