Argh, that should have been:

mysql -s -u xxx -pyyy -e 'show tables from dbname;'

> mysql -u xxx -pyyy -e 'select * from dbname.tblname;'

And:

mysql -s -u xxx -pyyy -e 'select * from dbname.tblname;'
