# kill -9 801
[1]    Killed                        /usr/local/bin/mysqld_safe
# netstat -nl|grep 3306

Ed suggests it's a permissions problem. Since I've had a sea of permissions problems to
deal with, I bet he's right. What files/ folders should I check for permissions, and what
should those permissions be?
