Sounds like a max heap table size reached :
mysql> show variables like '%heap%';
+---------------------+----------+
| Variable_name | Value |
+---------------------+----------+
| max_heap_table_size | 16777216 |
+---------------------+----------+
1 row in set (0.00 sec)
if you redefine it, it may work better in memory.
Else use temporary tables.

HEAP tables are stored in memory....

Error 12 may be Out of memory? Which would explain the error...
