Or, you can try my version of mod_auth_mysql, which is quite
streamlined, lets you have persistent connections to mysql as an
option (not mandatory!), and has been in production use authenticating 
over 3,000,000 times a month for over a year now.

Latest version is at ftp://ftp.kciLink.com/pub/ and it compiles quite
nicely as a DSO object using APXS or APACI.
