Good idea! But, that method will fail for dates past Feb 29th on leap 
years. 

MYSQL>select dayofyear('1999-03-01'), Dayofyear('2000-03-01');
+-------------------------+-------------------------+
| dayofyear('1999-03-01') | Dayofyear('2000-03-01') |
+-------------------------+-------------------------+
|                      60 |                      61 |
+-------------------------+-------------------------+
