The only difference between your installation and mine is that I'm running
RH 5.2 and you're running RH 5.1.  I'm wondering - the threads library is
the same, but I know they fixed a bunch of bugs in libc between 5.0/5.1 and
5.2.  You might want to throw together a 5.2 box and see if that solves your
problem - the code works great for me.

I'm running RH 5.2 on an AMD 266 box with 64 MB of RAM, if that matters.
