That's a good sign, actually. I means that mysqladmin was able to
find the server and attempt to connect to it. That's good. The server rejected
the connection attempt, so that's not so good. :-)
I would next ask you to try specifying your password:
mysqladmin -u root -p -h 127.0.0.1 variables
except that you may not know it, correct?

The following occurs because you didn't tell mysqladmin to do anything,
so it prints its help message. This would happen regardless of whether
the server is running.
