Subject:Newly installed mysql 4.0
View as plain text
(newbie warning)
Hi,
I just removed 3.23 and installed 4 (the first time I have done an installation.) as per
the docs I then tried to make a password for "root" and ran this from SSH root:

# /usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root password 'jman77'

but got this a reply:

/usr/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock'
(2)'
Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' exists!

Why is that? what should I do?

Please explain in steps coz am just trying to get the hang of this.

Thanks,
-Ryan
