I know very little about MySQL -- or linux -- but I had the same problem
you are having and fixed it the following way.
>MYSQL_UNIX_PORT=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock
>MYSQL_TCP_PORT=3307
>export MYSQL_UNIX_PORT MYSQL_TCP_PORT
>mysql_install_db
I found this solution in section 4.15.1 of the MySQL manual
